Every summer, half our guests are sleeping outside for the very first time — and most of them picked Kestrel Bend because the forest does the heavy lifting. This guide covers the only decisions that matter before your first trip.
Pick a forgiving site
First-timers do best on level ground near the facilities. West Forest Site has flat tent pads, soft needle ground and the restrooms five minutes away, which removes most midnight anxiety. Save the rocky perches for trip two.
Pack for a 30-degree swing
Summer days hit the high seventies and nights drop into the forties. Bring layers, not bulk: a fleece, a rain shell and a warm hat cover nearly everything. The camp store rents sleeping bags rated to freezing for guests who guessed wrong.
Arrive before dark
Pitching a tent by headlamp is a rite of passage you can skip. Aim to roll in by 4 PM, claim your picnic table, and give yourself a slow hour to learn the site while it is still light. The office stays open until 9 PM for late arrivals.
Camp notes
- Book two nights minimum — night one is setup, night two is the payoff.
- Download the trail map at home; the pines eat cell signals for breakfast.
- Ask the store for the s’mores kit. Ask them twice.
